Earned Value Management Experience:

Project Masters has experience providing the following services with regards to Earned Value Management:

Teaching Earned Value Management (EVM) as part of our Project Management theory classes.

Teaching organizations how to use EVM tools (Microsoft Project, etc.)

Consulting with organizations to assist them with EVM problems and issues.

EVM and Project Management Theory Training

In both our PMP Certification courses and our Project Management Fundamentals courses, we teach students the principles of EVM. This instruction includes teaching them how to calculate the EVM measures as well as how to use these measures to make key decisions regarding their projects. The focus of this training is to ensure that students understand what EVM is and how to use it with respect to managing their projects. In particular, this training demonstrates use of the EVM measures of ‘Cost Performance Index’ (CPI) and ‘Schedule Performance Index’ (SPI) to forecast cost and schedule performance for the life of the project.

Our approach to this training also emphasizes the need for properly structuring the (WBS) so that Earned Value Measurements can be captured at the deliverable and sub-deliverable levels (not just at the overall project level). This approach helps the organization to use EVM to more clearly see how well the producers of specific deliverables are performing and use this information for management decisions.

EVM and Project Management Tools

Project Masters also provides training with respect to the use of the MS Project software application to plan and manage projects utilizing EVM performance measures. This instruction involves teaching students how to use the tools in MS Project to baseline activities and track them in a manner that facilitates EVM measures and forecasts. In particular, we explain the difference between MS Project’s two approaches to EVM (i.e., using ‘% Physical Work Complete’ versus ‘% Duration Complete’). We teach use of both the stand-alone MS Project tool as well as the Enterprise version of MS Project.

EVM Consulting

Project Masters has also consulted with a number of government agencies and private organizations to assist them with specific problems and challenges they have encountered in their attempts to use EVM.

Because most organizations are relatively new to EVM, most of our consulting in this area has been focused on helping organizations set up their Project Management Information Systems in a manner that facilitates use of EVM and helping them develop business processes that allow the value of EVM to be leveraged.

We have also, in a few cases, been asked by organizations to help them analyze and solve specific problems that they have encountered as they were using EVM to measure project performance on ongoing projects and report their measurements to OMB (or other federal agencies).
